PICKING THE "RIGHT" MAJOR IN THIS ECONOMY

Many students that I have talked to over the years struggle with picking the right major. Many of them do not know what they want to be when they grow up, even if they are 40. Every student has to take a few years of the basic lit courses like English, Science, Psycology, and History before they can start taking their core classes, so you do not have to make a decision about your major before starting college or even within the first year. College classes have a way of letting you know what you like and do not like. It also shows you hidden areas you never thought you would excel in and opens up new doors. However, by the second year, you should be really starting to think about what you want to do and which direction you want to go in. If you still do not know by then, most colleges have departments that can do profile testing to see what areas you excel and do not excel in. One example is do not pick being a Doctor or Dentist if you hate Science. They can help direct you to an area you may be perfect for based on your ability and your personality, so take advantage of them. The other issue is THE ECONOMY. Be sure that you pick a major that you can get a job in. These days, everyone is going back to college in the hopes of getting a better job in a bad economy. Remember, going to college and getting a degree is not a guarantee of a job. Be careful to pick a major that there will be available jobs for you when you graduate. Good luck to all in anywhere you decide to go. The sky is the limit!
