What Is The Difference Between TI83, TI83+, TI84, TI84+ and Silver Editions

Every wonder which TI graphing calculator to get for your class? My students, as well as alot of the students I meet at our local college bookstore, do not know the differences between the different graphing calculators. Why so many different models? Why such a difference in the price ranges? Which one do I need for my class? I am so confused............

Well if that sounds like you, let me see if I can put your fears to rest. The TI83 and TI83+ are the older brown calculators. They only have I/O cable connections which means that you can download only calculator to calculator but not programs from the internet. Their memory capacity is smaller than the TI84 series, the TI83+ having more than the TI83. This calculator is fine for any student taking Algebra I or II in either High School or College level. This calculator is less expensive and is fine if you are looking to save some money. Used calculators are sometimes either refurbished or sold used, which you do take a risk buying used, but these calculators are so reliable that I have no problem recommending a student buying a used one if they are only going to use it a semester or two.

The TI84, TI84+ and Silver Edition calculators have not only I/O capability but also USB connections, so you can download not only calculator to calculator, but also off the internet. They have much more memory space than the TI83 series, and progress in memory size as you go up. These calculators are more expensive, and can run as high as $300. They do come in some really cool colors and some even clear where you can see the inner workings of your calculator. These are much more advanced and good if you plan on downloading alot of programs or using your calculator for a very long time.

I, myself, use a TI83 to download programs to students, but for daily use in my tutoring sessions, I use a TI84+ Silver Edition Pink version. I just like the color. I hope that this puts all your graphing calculator questions to rest. Please leave us your comment.
